The First Wind Turbine

Leave it to a Wolverine to create a device to generate electricity using a prevalent and renewable resource.  Charles Brush built the first large windmill to generate electricity in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1888.  It is still not clear why he chose to build the windmill in Ohio (though I suspect a buckeye threat had something to do with it).  The windmill had a 'picket fence' rotor and produced 12 kW.  (Photo and information from 20th Century Developments).

Mr. Brush was the first Michigan man to build a windmill for electricity, and will not be the last.  The State of Michigan has great potential to beco
me a leader in production and construction of windmills.  Not only does Michigan have wind consistent for utility-scale production, but it also has the manufacturing infrastructure to build windmill components.  The photo to the right (from WindpoweringAmerica.gov) shows that Michigan's coasts are especially hotbeds for wind energy production.

Welcome to MEL!

My name is Mary, and my initials are MEL, so I thought I'd come up with an acronym to encompass the purpose of my blog. Engaging my creative muscles, I managed to pull together "Modern E Leadership" where the "E" represents "Everything!" from Environmental, Entrepreneurial, Economical, and Efficient. I debated back and forth with the L, between lifestyles and leadership. Really it can be either! By living a sustainable lifestyle you can lead the way to a more sustainable future! It is just MEL, me, the author, passionate about living a healthy and sustainable life, here to help answer readers questions about how to live in healthy and sustainable manner!

Basically, the purpose of my blog is to give readers advice as to how to lead a sustainable lifestyle. Ultimately I envision the blog being user driven, in that readers are welcome to submit their questions to me, and I will answer them in my posts. Wondering how to get more MPG out of your car? Where to find an organic bath robe or lead-toy? Or perhaps the recipe to make biodiesel? Search no further, as MEL will be your one-stop shop for advice on how to live an enriched environmental, entrepreneurial, economical, or efficiency issue!

Whether you're a student, professor, budding entrepreneur, CEO of a Fortune 500 Company, or just any average jill/joe, send me your burning questions and I'll put in regular two cents as per how you can lead the way to a sustainable future!

All questions can be sent to Mel at melemmer@gmail.com
